What is the La Primitiva jackpot amount?

The La Primitiva lottery dates back to the time when Carlos III ruled as Mayor of Madrid. The Minister of Finance, Don Leopoldo de Gregorio proposed the idea of creating a national draw in order to gather money for the State coffers without having to ask the people for money directly through tax increases.

In this way the so-called Lottery by Numbers was born. The first draw took place December 10, 1763, at which time a total of 187,500 reals was raised. Years later it would change its name from Loteria por Numeros (Lottery by Numbers) to Lotería Primitiva.

In 1862 the government abolished the lottery draw but it resumed again on October 17, 1985. In 1989 a second draw day was incorporated.

As it stands today, the minimum La Primitiva lottery jackpot is €3 million. If no one manages to correctly match all the winning numbers, the jackpot will continue to roll over until it has been won.

Lottery rollovers occur when nobody managed to win the jackpot, meaning that the required lotto numbers were not matched. No jackpot winners will not lead to any jackpot payout, therefore the jackpot fund will roll over the next draw, hence the term “lottery rollover”.

In October 2015 the La Primitiva continuously rolled over until it reached a mammoth €101.7 million after a staggering 56 rollovers. A single winning La Primitiva ticket holder won this record-breaking jackpot by matching the six (6) main La Primitiva winning numbers and the Reintegro.

In February 2015 the second-highest jackpot took place with another single ticket bagging the coveted jackpot prize of €98 million.

The Spanish government levied a 20% tax on all lottery winnings over €2,500.

What are my chances of winning the La Primitiva jackpot?

There are seven (7) prize tiers in the La Primitiva lottery. Your chance of winning any prize is 1 in 8.43, while the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 193,838,160.

To get the La Primitiva lottery jackpot, you’ll need to match six (6) numbers, including the Reintegro number.

You simply choose six main numbers from a range of 1 to 49, plus a bonus number called the Complementario. Another number, the Reintegro, is then randomly chosen and assigned to you. To claim the top prize, you must match all six main lucky numbers, plus the Reintegro number. Matching all six numbers without the Reintegro only awards you with the jackpot. Meanwhile, the Complementario only comes into play if you manage to match it along with five of your numbers. Having the Complementario allows you to win by as much as 20 times a normal 5-number win.

The unique 2-bonus balls feature allows you to win even bigger prizes-or at least get your ticket price refunded. Thus, La Primitiva offers several ways for you to win big.

Bi-weekly La Primitiva lottery draws give you two chances to win each week, while a rollover mechanic allows the jackpot to grow when no one wins, increasing the jackpot substantially.

La Primitiva’s Reintegro is an additional number that is randomly chosen for you and determines the top prize winner and allows for big wins.

The following table lists your chances of winning on La Primitiva and other Spanish lottery prizes;

Match Chances
Six (6) numbers + Reintegro 1 in 139,838,160
Six (6) numbers 1 in 13,983,816

Five (5) numbers 1 in 55,491

Reintegro 1 in 10
Overall chances of winning any prize are 1 in 8.43
