El Gordo FAQ’s

Do I have to match the El Gordo winning numbers in the exact order?

You do not need to match the numbers in the exact order that they reflect in the El Gordo draw.

The numbers are drawn at random, and the lotto numbers will be put in numerical order for your convenience as they appear on your ticket after the draw.

How many numbers are used in El Gordo?

The El Gordo lottery is played by selecting numbers from 2 play blocks; one with numbers from 1 to 54 and another from 0 to 9.

Players have to pick 5 main numbers in the first grid and 1 in the second (known as the ‘Key’ number).

5 numbers are drawn at random from 1-54, and then another one for the key number from 0-9.

Prizes are awarded to tickets whose numbers match the drawn ones. The jackpot is for a perfect match (5+1), second prize is for a 5 ball match, third for 4+1, and so on until a 2 match, totaling 9 prize categories.

Tickets whose Key number matches the drawn Key number are entitled to a refund of the amount played.

Historical El Gordo Changes

The 20th century brought with it a greater demand for more lotteries in Spain. In 1985, the La Primitiva lottery was brought back after it was abolished in 1862. The fact that the La Primitiva lottery was such a huge success, other lotteries launched like the BonoLoto in 1988 and the El Gordo in 1993. When it was first launched, the El Gordo draw was only held once a month. In October 1997, it was changed to a weekly draw and in 2005 an additional ninth (9th) prize tier was added.
