What is El Gordo de Navidad?

Sorteo de Navidad, Lotería de Navidad, El Gordo de Navidad – Whichever way you say it, it all makes reference to the same brand – the Spanish Christmas Raffle. It is officially one of the oldest lotteries in the world, having first been organized by a branch of the Spanish Public Administration in 1812.

El Gordo, which translates to ‘the big one,’ is the name given to the first prize in the game. However, it’s also commonly used to describe the game itself. The lottery is held every December 22nd and entails a raffle instead of the conventional lottery draw.

Players purchase shares that have five-digit codes. While players can opt to buy a full ticket known as a billete, they could also choose to buy one-tenth of a ticket, called a ‘share’ (or décimo) for a substantially lower price. Please note that we only sell shares on our website.

What can I win?

In terms of the overall prize payout, the Spanish Christmas lottery is by far the world’s biggest lottery.

The more people playing, the higher the prize value per person. For example, if one player bought a complete billete that won the first prize (El Gordo), they would earn €4 million, but if ten players share a décimo with the identical winning code, each receives €400,000.

Raffle numbers are printed in sets with each number appearing over one hundred times throughout the set. Each billete that bears the same code wins the stated prize, which means that more than a hundred jackpot prizes of €4 million are won on the night.

Moreover, there are additional rewards in La Pedrera (“the avalanche of pebbles”). In total, 70% of ticket sales income is returned in prizes and there are a number of opportunities to win across other prize tiers.

The amount each decimo share wins varies with one first prize: “El Gordo”. Winning “the big one” is worth €400,000 per decimo. From El Gordo, there are then a number of tiered prizes.

  • Second prize is worth €125,000
  • Third prize is worth €50,000
  • Fourth prize is worth €20,000
  • Fifth prize is worth €6,000
  • Sixth prize – “La Pedrea” awards of €100
  • There are additional lower-tier prizes of €20

How to Play the El Gordo de Navidad Spanish Raffle

The Spanish Christmas lottery is more like a raffle than any other type of lottery although you may hear that people love to play the Christmas lotto.

Players don’t choose their own numbers and instead are randomly assigned numbers from a pool of available decimo numbers. Only a limited number of decimos are released and it’s for this reason that tickets could sell out before the draw takes place. This is why it’s important to get your entries as soon as you can!

The same five-digit number is printed on more than one ticket. The precise number of times a number is repeated will vary from draw to draw, but it may be as high as 195 times. These full tickets are divided into smaller parts, known as ‘decimos’. You can usually buy a tenth of the ticket (a decimo), but sometimes people want to purchase an entire ticket which we call “billete.”

  • If you’re a decimo holder and your number is matched, you’ll get 10% of the prize.
  • If you purchase a full ticket, you will win the entire prize amount if your number is selected.

The Drawing Process

The unique entry process is only the beginning – the actual draw procedure hasn’t changed since 1812!

The winning numbers are pulled from two separate ball containers, which are then announced to the public by school pupils from San Ildefonso’s institution (formerly a school for orphans of Spanish public servants).

The draw is a time-consuming procedure that must be completed for each of the many thousands of prize tiers. As a result, the draw may take 3–4 hours to complete, with kids working about eight to nine shifts – the same number of frames as the numbers to be drawn.

When does the draw take place?

While the draw happens in Madrid, Spain on December 22nd every year, tickets are available several months prior. As registered player s on PlayHugeLottos, you will be the first to find out when you can buy El Gordo de Navidad tickets online.
